OUR  VOLUNTEERS

Your Volunteering Makes a Real Impact...

Below are FOM sponsored and operated programs that further enhance the students’ educational experience at Marquez. We are always looking for help in any program run by Friends of Marquez, whether you would like to Chair, Co-Chair, or volunteer hours.

Year of Parties (YOP) is a FUNdraising effort for Friends of Marquez.   Through YOP, you can host and/or attend a party to help raise funds. Our YOP chairs are here to help you navigate the party-with-Marquez world. We can help you coordinate a party or come up with party ideas. All party ideas are welcome and encouraged, you decide the what, where, when, why, how many people can attend, etc. We help you promote your party, Marquez families attend, all money paid to attend the party goes directly to YOP/FOM (the hosts underwrite and organize the parties). The party is a success, everyone has fun while raising money for our wonderful school. Win-Win-Win! We look forward to helping you host and seeing you partying it up!

If you have any questions or are interested in hosting, or want to brainstorm any party idea, please email Claudia at yearofparties@friendsofmarquez.com

Read-A-Thon – Reading is fun!  Each year, children read as much as they can during this time, gathering pledges from friends and family.  Parent volunteers coordinate the entire event, and keep up with this Marquez tradition year after year.

Annual Auction – The Auction is Marquez’s “not-to-miss” fundraising gala of the year, and it is our second biggest fundraiser.  It is a most anticipated dinner party featuring a live, silent and online auction.  A large team of parent volunteers work together to organize the entire event, from all aspects of event planning to soliciting auction item donations to helping classes create gift baskets, original artwork and other items for auction. Volunteers also help set up the day of the event.

Book Fair – For a week in November and just in time for the holidays, the annual Scholastic Book Fair transforms the auditorium into a bookstore and gift shop with best sellers and other materials.  Net proceeds from the sales go to FOM to fund enrichment programs.  Volunteers help staff the weeklong event 8am – 3pm and also help set up the week before.

Shop to Support FOM - Shopping on many websites can earn FOM free money because the business gives a percentage of the total amount you spend back to FOM. It's virtually free money. This includes iGive.com, AmazonSmile, and Ralphs. Volunteers would help run these programs by helping to market this to our school community or be at school events to help get parents to sign up.

Edible Garden Administrator & Volunteers – Marie Steckmest was our volunteer master gardner at Marquez for many years. She's just retired from the position, so now we're looking for a new coordinator to help take care of our gardens in and around school, and our edible garden that the kids work in weekly. If you love to garden, this could be the perfect volunteer position for you. Volunteers are needed to help with garden maintenance such as watering and mulching, and assisting during classroom cooking and garden planting lessons.

Marquee – The Marquez Marquee is a way for the school to communicate upcoming events.  This volunteer is in charge of changing the Marquee every week for the upcoming events and kids' birthdays for those families that have paid to have their child’s birthday recognized on our Marquee. This is a fun volunteer position that many kids like to help with.

Community Sponsorships – This team reaches out to our generous local business partners and sponsors for contributions benefitting our award-winning and community-defining neighborhood school. If you like sales and going after potential donors, this is the perfect fit.

Grant Writing – Did you know that, in an average year, the Grant Writing Team wins over $15,000 in grants for Marquez?  This team researches and puts together applications for available outside funding opportunities from corporations, foundations and community organizations.  This team can always use more help researching new opportunities and coming up with winning grant proposals.

Volunteer Recruitment and Coordination – Help recruit and coordinate the next generation of FOM leaders!  At Marquez, parent volunteers do whatever it takes to bridge that ever-widening gap between what LAUSD is able to provide and what we, as parents, strive to provide our kids in their daily education.  Recruiting and coordinating volunteers is a full-time operation - Let the FOM team know by completing the form to see what you can do to help!
